The phone shrilled a disagreement to his statement, and Franklin expelled a sigh of irritation before unfolding himself from the chair to answer it. |

"Doc Franklin here." Chris's mouth twitched at the old-sounding name applied to such a young-looking man. Dan listened to the caller, then his gaze flicked to Chris. The expression in Franklin's eyes made Chris's half smile fade. "Yeah, I hear you. I'll take care of it." Dan hung up. ''Does a black van with four men inside mean anything to you?" |

Chris came to his feet in an instant. "Where?" |

"In town. They've been asking questions. The old-timer who sent you up here thought I should know." |

"We've got to get out of here." Chris headed toward the closed door to the office. Dan's hand on his arm stopped him. |

"The folks in town sent them off onto the back roads. They'll be driving for hours before they realize they're lost. The townsfolk would never let any harm come to D.J. if they could help it. Her father was born here. So was she. We protect our own." |

"Those menthey won't give up. Sooner or later they'll be back. I've got to take her somewhere they can't find us, at least until she's well enough to go even farther."
